I placed a big mirror on a coral reef to investigate how sea creatures and large reef fish behave when seeing their reflection for the first time. Do they recognize themselves or attack? What are they seeing, and how do they behave? Why do some react so violently, while others seem unfazed? We tested a wide variety of reef species, from schools of damselfish and wrasses to Napoleon wrasse, hawksbill turtles, eagle rays, emperors, angelfish, moray eels, and large snappers.
