Before djembe was hot, folks walked with ashiko-styled drums. These cone-shaped instruments were ubiquitous in the 1980s and 1990s. The technique demonstrated here was brought to the States from Nigeria by Baba Moses Miannes in the '30s. He taught Chief Bey, Montego Joe, Baba Taiwo Duval--Olatunji's battery. They taught me.
