Is United Nations membership really important for a country? In this video, I explore the ways in which joining the UN really matters for states and explain that the difference between being in and out of the United Nations is not always as clearcut as many think.

UN membership has come to be seen as the ultimate goal for an aspiring state. It says that a state is a full part of the international system. However, there is also a lot of confusion about what joining the United Nations really means. In this video I explore the concept of United Nations membership from two very different angles and ask the question: Does UN membership matter? In the first part, I look at what it means in legal and political terms. I show that it doesn't offer as much clarity on whether a territory is a state or not as many imagine. For example, there is no such thing as a UN recognised state or country. I then look at what UN membership means in terms of being a full part of the international system. Using some key cases from International Relations - such as Kosovo, Palestine, Taiwan and the Vatican - I show that while UN membership is extremely important, joining the UN is actually more complex than many realise. It is not a case of a country either ebbing in the UN or out of it. States can in fact be in some parts of the UN system - such as UNESCO, the IMF and World Bank - but not a full member of the Organisation or in other UN bodies.
