Hey guys! Have you ever had problems cooling your PC? I used to keep my tower jammed inside my desk until, one day, it got completely fried! So, to make sure it was cool I left it next to my desk without the side panels on. It looked really trashy and got in my way (en route to refrigerator--not cool).
I did this little project on a shoestring budget, using tools I had lying around in my apartment. Also, you can see my apartment is where the build went down, so I didn't have much room. Anyway, I'm guessing you probably have a few questions now...
Q: Isn't that fan overkill? It looks like it guzzles electricity!
A: Correct, hence the control knob on the side :) I don't really need it on all the time like I said in the vid!
Q: Is that really a potentiometer controlling the fan speed?
A: Not at all! I should have filmed some portions over again, but I was too lazy/hate editing. The dial underneath the plastic knob is not actually a potentiometer (or "pot"), but a simple switch; paired with the windings of the fan stator, it is sort of a variometer (correct me if I'm wrong please!) which allows you to select how many turns of copper wire you will send electricity through and thus the speed of the fan.
Q: Don't your friends complain about it being too loud?
A: My music is louder.
Q: Should I do this to my comp/desk?
A: Absolutely! Try something a little different too like installing the fan on the other side (if you mobo can be oriented to face that direction) to cool you off at the same time... actually, I bet this would feel awesome!
Please leave any comments, questions, suggestions, whatever!
