Description:
LEGO Technic Car Chassis (with flat 4 engine) 8860 Speed Build with Instructions.
This set was released in Europe and the US in 1980 under the “Technic series”, and was known as the Car Chassis set no 8860. To differentiate it from LEGO set 853 Car Chassis, it was given the addition description of the “flat 4 engine”. It was also known as the Auto Chassis in the US, again under the Expert Builder Sets (I think?). It has 668 components and was for LEGO builders 9 years +. The model measures 47 x 19.5W x 14.5H (cm) or 18.5L x 7.75W x 5.75H (inches). It’s a good challenge for the builder to undertake, and technically a leap forward compared to the 853 set – though both have their own very separate characters and are both brilliant cars. The 8860 has rear suspension, a rear-mounted flat four engine with a cooling fan driven from the engine. The two speed gear box transmits the power to the rear wheels via a differential. There’s rack and pinion steering and the two seats have both tilt and slide function.
The official LEGO advertisement from 1981 reads “If it’s a challenge you want it’s a challenge you’ll get with the LEGO Expert Builder Auto Chassis. You build it from the ground up and you build the working parts right in. It has gear, pistons and universal joints that really move. Add an expert builder power pack and it revs to life”.
I have fond memories of this set, receiving it for Christmas when I was just eight years of age. The colours, the size, its functionality and the playability…what a set. The pride I completing the build (the engine and gear box I found very difficult and needed help from my dad). I was a very happy boy. Being re-united with my set again a few months ago brought back all those great feelings and I started building LEGO again. Something I felt was missing is back - my creativity. My advice to whoever takes the time to read this is simple. Find your passion and do it – mentally you will feel re-invigorated; and that's got to be a good thing!
If you like this video, please check out my other LEGO videos (Model Set Reviews, Speed Builds, and Restoring LEGO Sets). My aim is to show how these sets work, from the basics through to complex multi-shift gearboxes found on the latest car models. I will be focusing on the LEGO vintage sets first and then working my way up to the latest Porsche and Bugatti models; charting how these sets have evolved and continue to capture our imagination.
