You Don't Break the 10 Commandments - You Misread Them

Most readings of the Ten Commandments assume they are primarily about behavior, morality, or social order. That assumption is precisely the problem.

In this video, I argue that the Ten Commandments are not first a moral checklist, nor a timeless ethical code abstracted from history. They are a revelatory structure governing allegiance, origin, life, and truth, and they only make full sense when read through the prophets and fulfilled in Christ.

The commandments do not begin with human action. They begin with God’s revealed act. Each command addresses where life is sourced, where authority is grounded, and what counts as faithfulness once God has spoken and acted in history. When they are misread as external rules, they are inevitably reduced, domesticated, and weaponized. When they are read prophetically, they expose idolatry, false authority, and spiritual theft at their root.

In this presentation, we examine how Jesus fulfills the Law by relocating its center. Murder is not merely physical violence, but the suppression of life-giving truth. Adultery is not merely sexual unfaithfulness, but divided allegiance. Theft is not merely taking property, but claiming value, righteousness, or identity apart from what God has given. Obedience is not compliance, but alignment with what God has revealed and fulfilled.

This is why Jesus does not relax the commandments. He intensifies them by restoring their original function: to govern covenantal reality after revelation has occurred.
