Zenda was a 1963 pre-Broadway casualty which starred Alfred Drake in duel roles as the King of Zenda and Richard Rassendyl. Based loosely on the book The Prisoner of Zenda by Anthony Hope, the score was composed by Vernon Duke with lyrics by Sid Kuller, Martin Charnin, and Leonard Adelson. The book was by Everett Freeman.
The major change was making Rassendyl a song-and-dance man, and the addition of Chita Rivera's character, Athena Constantine, the King's lover. Additional cast members included Susan Luckey, Bob Avian, Larry Dean, Peter Brandon, Jock Livingston, Marc Wilder, Laurence Guittard (in his first pre-Broadway production), and others.
The show was scheduled to open at the Mark Hellinger on November 26th 1963, but it closed after its third tryout stop and never continued. This sound system recording is assumed to be from the show's first tryout stop, the Curran Theatre in San Francisco, in August of 1963.
