Anton van der Horst was born in 1899 and studied organ at Amsterdam Conservatory. By the time he was 30, he was professor for organ and composition at the Music Lyceum, Amsterdam, and was giving concerts all over Holland and abroad.
In 1930, he came to London to accompany a Dutch artist for recording purposes at the Central Hall, Westminster. An official from the Columbia company happened to be in the hall at the time, and was so impressed by van der Horst's playing that he commissioned him on the spot to make a series of records.
'The Cuckoo and the Nightingale' - which comprises part of the 1st movement together with the second movement of Handel's 'Organ Concerto in F major,' HWV 295 - was recorded on the Hill organ of the Central Hall, Westminster, in November 1929.
I transferred this recording from Australian Columbia DO 190.
