Can performance art effect social change? How do artists use the actions of live bodies to represent concerns in society? Can these creative expressions elicit solutions? In the current state of rapidly shifting global affairs, societal conditions seem more challenging than ever. Artists are increasingly taking up the mantle as advocates to expose and attempt to remedy injustices.
We considered these issues in a public conversation with wen yau and Isaac Chong Wai, Hong Kong artists of different generations who use their performances to explore both personal and collective dilemmas in their communities. Each artist expands on their particular practice and discusses the intentions and motivations behind their works. Highlighting their commissions for M+ Live Art: Audience as Performer, as well as past performances, this conversation examines the idea of art as a cultural tool that connects people and communities to inspire and encourage social change.
