Welding in the Rocker Panel - Mazda MX5 Miata Rust Repair Pt. 4 - Underdog Garage

In part 4 of this Mazda MX5 Miata Rust Repair Series we are welding in our MX5 rocker panel to replace the rusted and corroded one.

Here are the steps I took to install this rocker panel:
1. I had to trim the replacement panel to fit perfectly in where the old one went. So I took it to the bench and trimmed some sections off of the panel
2. After a few sessions of trimming and fitting the panel to the MX5 I then had to prep the metal for welding. I sprayed Weld-thru primer on the bare metal, which helps protect the metal from corrosion
3. I removed paint from any places on the rocker panel where I would be welding to
4. Once the rocker panel was ready I clamped it to the Miata body with welding pliers to ensure proper fitment.
5. I started spot welding the rocker patch panel to the MX5 in different sections. I started at the top primarily, but I worked around the panel to distribute the heat and prevent warpage.
6. After getting the entire rocker panel welded in I coated the bare metal spots in primer.
Lastly I sprayed fluid film on the inside of the rocker panel to prevent further corrosion. After that this Miata's Rocker Panel was just about finished!

I also ran seam sealer along the bottom edge to prevent any water from getting in between the panels since this Miata rocker panel is so close to the road.
