In 1728, Handel composed this music as an Air for his opera "Tolomeo" ("Ptolemy"). In 1928, poet and composer Arthur Somervell wrote lyrics and set them to the music. He named his poem "Silent Worship" and it began with the lines:
"Did you not hear my Lady,
Go down the garden singing?".
Ever since I heard a recording of the English Tenor, David Hughes singing this, over 40 years ago, I thought it would make a lovely solo for flute and piano.
I have kept the melody simple and unaltered, just moving it up an octave now an then, and added some undulating quaver (eighth note) movement in the piano part at the repeat of the melody to achieve interest for the listener.
