In this clip, Assistant Chief Chris McGrath speaks about the impact of Community Oriented Policing. The San Diego Police Department’s Gang Intervention Unit has a main goal of reaching youth, their families, and the communities they live in by means of education.
In 2009, SDPD’s Gang Intervention Unit started the Youth Boxing Program. It was developed after the unit started interacting with youth, ages 14-18, who needed a safe space to keep them out of areas with prominent illegal activity. The youth who come into these programs are looking for a way to separate themselves from the bad habits they’ve had in the past.
The Youth Boxing Program instills responsibility, commitment to a task, and physical and mental conditioning. It is essential, not only for intervention and prevention but also, for building trust with juveniles in our communities. Juveniles are indoctrinated into the gang life as early as 12 years old. Reaching the youth at an early age, building trust, teaching morals and respect, and showing them that programs are available make a huge investment in their future and the community.
The Youth Boxing Program is just one of many programs the San Diego Police Foundation contributes to.
