Wayne Cochran performs "Goin' Back to Miami" and then chats with Dave for two segments.
Paul Shaffer, Keyboard, September, 1983:
"A lot of times what we do has the characteristics of a jam, because we might not have any time to rehearse. On our show everything seems to take precedence over the musical number—sometimes. There was one case where Wayne Cochran got off a plane, and when he got to the studio, they said, 'Oh, you thought you were going to be on tomorrow? No, you're on today!' I mean, it was late, about five minutes before the taped rolled. We went on the air and played 'Goin' Back to Miami' with him without ever having run it down. The studio audience watched us as we talked it through: 'This is the bass line, then we'll go to a chorus.' We had sort of a theoretical format in mind. When we went on, we came close to it [laughs]."
