On today’s podcast, Ashley Thompson and Mario Ritter, Jr. host the show. Ashley tells listeners what they are going to hear.
(:53) First, John Russell has a story about Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain above sea level. Mount Everest and the rest of the Himalayas are continuing on an upward movement that began at their birth around 50 million years ago. The mountains are a product of a collision between Eurasia and the Indian subcontinent. Scientists have found that the mountain is rising faster than expected and now they have a theory to explain it. https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a...
Then, (7:17) Bryan Lynn presents the Technology Report. The U.S. Commerce Department has proposed a ban on the sale of self-driving vehicles that use Chinese or Russian technologies. The agency said providing access to such systems through software or hardware could lead some foreign governments to collect "sensitive data” and seek control of vehicles. https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a...
(14:50) Following the report, Ashley and Bryan talk about the report which says the American self-driving cars do not have a lot of Russian and Chinese parts. Bryan notes that currently these cars do not have very much Chinese or Russian technology in them.
Finally, (18:53) on Lesson of the Day, Jill Robbins and Andrew Smith explore intonation in questions. In Lesson 27 of Let’s Learn English, Anna is feeling sick. Jill and Andrew use the episode to discuss a number of grammar points. They explain what it means to “overdo it.” They also discuss forming questions with intonation. They discuss the difference between “yes or no” questions and question that aim to get information about who, what, when, why or how. At the end, Jill and Andrew do a chant to remind listeners about irregular verbs. https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a...
Then Ashley and Mario sign off.
