Do you ever feel like God will not answer your prayers because you have recently sinned in a worse way than usual? Do you feel like He is more likely to bless you if you have been faithfully attending church, reading your Bible, and praying? Do you believe that God’s love depends on your performance? If so, pay attention to what Paul is saying! Our sins do not cause God to love us less, and our good deeds cannot make Him love us more.
We are saved because Christ loved us and gave Himself for us (2:20). God’s love for us is steadfast and does not change according to our obedience. Nothing can shake His love for us (Rom. 8:38-39). We were saved by His free grace through the Spirit, and we continue the same way (Tom Greene quoted in Bible Expositor and Illuminator, Union Gospel Press, Summer Quarter 2025).
