Why was the Crucifixion of Jesus Necessary?: A Good Friday Reflection on the Need for the Cross
A mystification and mild horror at the cross is understandable. Indeed, it's precisely how the world reacted to the Christian message when it was first carried from its birthplace of Judaea by missionaries like Paul in the first and second centuries. The Apostle Paul, in his own words, preached a message of “Christ crucified” (1 Cor. 2:2). Think, for a moment, of how strange that sounds.
Christ is the Greek form of the Hebrew word Messiah. The word “Messiah” refers to a descendent of King David— a great man who would one day rise up from amongst the people and lead them to victory against their oppressors. Crucifixion was a dreadful form of punishment involving the public humiliation and slow torture of the victim.
To preach a message of “Christ crucified” is to preach a message about a failed hero; a liberator who has been utterly crushed and defeated by his enemies. No wonder that, to the Jews, this message was scandalous. No wonder that, to the Greeks, this message was sheer foolishness (cf. 1 Cor. 1:18-25).
So, it's worth asking the question: Why a crucified Messiah? Why was Jesus’ suffering necessary? And what does it accomplish for us?
