3 Year Dental School Vs 4 Year Dental School UOP & USC Comparison | Dr Joyce Kahng

Helloo! I just wanted to do a quick review of my experiences at a 3 year dental school compared with experiences at a 4 year dental school.

Why am I qualified to talk about this? I am a 2010 graduate from the Arthur A Dugoni University of the Pacific School of Dentistry. I worked at the USC Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry from 2014 to 2020 first as an adjunct faculty, then as an Assistant Clinical Professor. To my knowledge there isn't a lot of information out there specifically on the unique accelerated 3 year UOP program in comparison to a 4 year program.

Please remember that these are based on my own experiences and every dental school is different.

Why I loved UOP:
It was practical and clinically focused. We started working in the clinic earlier, at the same time as being in preclinical, which looking back was useful for bridging the gap of just DOING things in preclinical to UNDERSTANDING how it is applicable to real life. After graduating from UOP, I felt like I had the skills to go into private practice (given I had a proper mentor and job lined up to guide me). However, I did a 1 year GPR instead to further my learning. The didactic curriculum moves REALLY FAST. By the end of 3rd year, I was very burned out (TBH). But imo...time is money. I would rather hustle and learn at full capacity for 3 years than stretch it out into 4 years. That is a personal preference.

Again, whether you go to UOP or USC, they are both top schools and you will get a good education at either one of them. This video was meant to make more clear how each school is different in style and speed. Pick the one that works for you.
