The principality of Moirang was situated in the southwestern region of the Meitei Kingdom. Until the mid-fifteenth century CE, Moirang maintained its independence and remained a powerful polity. However, during the reign of Meitei King Ningthoukhomba (1432-1467 CE), Moirang suffered defeat and devastation, and its ruler, King Sanahongba, was killed. Furthermore, ten war captives were brought to Imphal, beheaded, and buried in layers of earth fillings that formed a mound known as Moirangkhom to this day. From that point onwards, Moirang became subordinate to the Meitei Kingdom although the Meitei did not administered Moirang directly, its affairsvwere governed by a ruler appointed by the Metei King till the reign of Meitei King Chingthangkhomba (1763-1797 CE( When Moirang was totally merged to the Meitei fold.
