Battle of Kambula | Zulus VS British | Anglo-Zulu War

The Battle of Kambula was the true turning point of the Anglo-Zulu War — the moment the British Empire, humiliated at Isandlwana, finally struck back with a brutal and decisive victory.

In March 1879, Colonel Henry Evelyn Wood and just 2,000 British and Colonial troops found themselves facing the main Zulu impi — nearly 21,000 warriors, including veterans of Isandlwana. Exhausted, hungry, and burning with confidence after their triumph at Hlobane, the Zulus swept toward Kambula expecting an easy kill.

What they found instead was a fortress.

From a brilliantly constructed wagon laager and stone redoubt, Wood’s men unleashed disciplined volleys, devastating artillery, and precise counterattacks that shattered the Zulu assault. After four hours of relentless fighting, the battle ended in one of the most one-sided engagements of the war. Between 2,000 and 3,000 Zulus were killed, while British losses remained small. The great regiments of the Zulu Kingdom never recovered.

Kambula proved that Isandlwana was not a failure of British courage, but of preparation. Now fortified and determined, the British turned the spear back upon the Zulu. From Kambula to Gingindlovu and finally Ulundi, the end of the Zulu Kingdom had begun.

This is the story of a desperate retreat, a fearless stand, and the brutal clash that sealed the fate of a nation.
