This month I got to speak with John Thorp, the PRO of the Native Irish Honey Bee Society (NIHBS). We chatted about the new NIHBS queen rearing programme which started earlier this year, the advantages of having Apis Mellifera Mellifera (AMM) bees, and how people can get started in queen rearing.
The programme is the first of its kind in Ireland and so far has been a success, even though it was largely carried out through the 2021 lockdowns. This meant that fewer people could meet in person to work on the hands-on aspects of rearing queens and that the educational side of things all had to be done online via Zoom. That didn’t stop them, however, and it looks like 2022 will be an even bigger year for NIHBS.
