What Are Termites?
Termites are social insects in the order Blattodea, making them distant cousins of cockroaches.
Over 2,700 species live worldwide, mostly in warm and tropical regions.
Often nicknamed “white ants,” but they are not ants — they evolved separately.
Termite Society (The Colony)
A termite colony works like a living machine, divided into castes:
Queen 👑
Enormous, long-lived, lays thousands of eggs per day.
Can live 20+ years — one of the longest lifespans of any insect.
King 🤴
Stays with the queen for life — rare among insects.
Workers 🛠️
Blind, soft-bodied, countless.
Build tunnels, farm fungus, care for eggs, feed the entire colony.
Soldiers 🛡️
Armed with strong jaws or chemical-spraying heads.
Defend against predators (especially ants).
Cannot feed themselves — workers must provide food.
Alates ✈️
Winged termites that swarm from the nest once a year.
Their mission: start new colonies
The Builders
Termites are famous for their mounds — some rise more than 8 meters tall.
Mounds include:
Ventilation shafts (natural air-conditioning)
Nurseries for eggs
Fungus farms for food
Royal chambers
