Some Christians might wonder, ‘Did Jesus go to Church? If so, what Church did he attend?’

In this episode, Israel Tour Guide “Danny the Digger” Herman takes Jeff on a quest to learn more about the customs of Jesus, and in particular, his attendance of a Synagogue every Sabbath. They head to Magdala, where the remains of two 1st Century Synagogues have been unearthed. How likely is it that Jesus attended a Magdala synagogue? What might Jesus’ role have been when he attended? Their attention is turned to the Magdala Stone replica, sitting in the midst of Magdala's 1st Century synagogue. What was the purpose of this mysterious 1st Century stone?

Having learned that the authentic Magdala Stone is on display at the Yigal Allen Centre a short distance away, Jeff heads there to take a look at the Stone with his own eyes for the very first time. Looking at the Magdala Stone transports Jeff and Danny back in time 2000 years as they learn what was important to the synagogue community at Magdala and what was central to their gatherings.

Throughout this episode, theologians, archaeologists, and historians discuss the importance of the Sabbath day in Jesus’ culture and how it was kept holy. How did a synagogue service run at the time of Jesus? Was it used for worship and prayer? These questions and more are explored as we learn about the weekly Sabbath customs of Jesus and his Jewish family, friends and followers.
