Massive meteor showers! The biggest supermoon! A Supernova and the birth of a new star! Amazing Astronomical events you'll be able to see in your lifetime and one of them is going to happen in 2022! Stay tuned to find out which one.
Supernova, 2080.
A star called V Sagittae is 7,800 light-years away and is predicted to go supernova somewhere between 2067 and 2099, most likely towards the middle of this range. The star is barely visible, even with mid-sized telescopes but when it goes supernova and explodes it will be the brightest star in our night sky, visible to the naked eye, and possibly even brighter than Venus
Venus occults Jupiter, 2065.
On the 22nd of November in 2065, Venus will pass in front of Jupiter and form something that will look like a single bright star. The last time this happened was January 1818, over 200 years ago! Unfortunately, it will occur during the daytime so you will need a telescope to be able to see it properly.
Halley's Comet, 2061.
This comet is the only short-period comet that is regularly visible to the naked eye from Earth, and it can be seen once every 75 or 76 years, which means you'll probably only see it once in your lifetime. The next time we'll be able to see it is in 2061, but if you can't wait that long, you can see the Orionid Meteor shower which happens every year between early October and early November and is caused by the Earth passing through the stream of debris that trails Halley's comet.
Supermoon, 2052.
On November 14th, 2016, a full moon coincided with the moon's closest approach to Earth and gave us a supermoon that was 14% bigger than normal. If you missed it, there will be another event on November 25th, 2034, however, if you want to see the biggest supermoon of the century you'll have to wait until December 6th, 2052 when the moon will be just 221,472 miles away.
Planetary Alignment, 2040.
It is impossible for all the planets in our solar system to align, the closest they will come to this will happen on May 6th, 2492 and unfortunately, we won't be around to see it. We will be able to see a rare alignment of Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and the moon which happens roughly every 50 years, the next event will happen on September 8th, 2040 at around 7:30 pm
Leonid Meteor Shower, 2031
This event occurs when the earth passes through the orbit of the periodic comet Tempel Tuttle. The Leonid Meteor shower is caused by tiny meteoroids from the comets debris trail burning up in the Earth's atmosphere, this happens every 33 years and is usually a relatively small event with between 10-15 meteoroids per hour, however, in 2031 a major shower will occur which could produce in excess of 100,000 meteoroids an hour.
Close Asteroid Flyby, 2029
The Asteroid 99942 Apophis is a potentially hazardous asteroid with a diameter of 1213 ft. For a brief period, there was a fear that the asteroid would impact the Earth on April 13th, 2029, but further calculations have completely dismissed the possibility. It will, however, pass closer than it ever has before, closer indeed than some geosynchronous communication satellites, ten times closer than the moon, but still over 19,000 miles away. It will be visible with the naked eye in Europe, Africa, and Western Asia, so if you're from anywhere else, you may want to start booking your tickets now.
Solar Eclipse 2027
Solar eclipses can usually be seen once a year from somewhere on the planet, they can be partial, annular, and total, but the one due to happen on Monday, August 2nd, 2027 is something special. Normally a total solar eclipse lasts from 2-6 minutes, the longest solar eclipse ever, lasted 7 minutes and 28 seconds and happened in 743 BC. The 2027 total eclipse will be the longest since 1973, lastly 6 minutes and 23 seconds!
Birth of a Star, 2022.
Cygnus is one of the brightest constellations in our sky and it will be getting a new addition in 2022, and we will all be able to see it. The star, KIC 9832227 is located around 1800 light-years away and was once thought to be a single star with a pulsating light, but was found to actually be two stars tightly orbiting each other, further study has discovered that they are actually orbiting faster and closer to each other every time and the collision of the two stars is imminent. This collision will cause an incredibly bright explosion called a Nova that will form a new star. The event will be visible to the naked eye and it will be the first time mankind has ever witnessed the birth of a star!
