After a long period of West Coast Railways substituting diesel traction for the advertised steam, Locomotive Services Ltd have brought the real thing back to Carlisle. 61306 Mayflower heads Saphos Trains "Settle & Carlisle Fellsman" from Crewe and Chester.
The weather forecast is excellent so I opt for a day out along the line - let's get some fresh air and scenery - and Michael yet again joins me - he's a glutton for punishment!
One of the joys of Saphos Trains is seeing a train of genuine steam age carriages in a consistent steam age livery. For those of us who remember the days before diesel - and then electric - took over - Mark 2 coaches simply don't belong behind a steam engine.
Was it really necessary to have a diesel at the rear of today's train? Mayflower may not be in the same league as Sir Nigel or British India Line - but B1s routinely handled long-distance fast and semi-fast services in their day.
