The Old City (Hebrew: הָעִיר הָעַתִּיקָה, romanized: ha-ir ha-atiqah; Arabic: البلدة القديمة, romanized: al-Balda al-Qadimah) is a 0.9-square-kilometre (0.35 sq mi) walled area[2] within the modern city of Jerusalem.
The history of the Old City has been documented in significant detail, notably in old maps of Jerusalem over the last 1,500 years. This area constituted the entire city of Jerusalem until the late 19th century; neighbouring Arab villages such as Silwan and new Jewish villages such as Mishkenot Sha'ananim later became part of the municipal boundaries.

Lions' Gate (Hebrew: שער האריות, romanized: Sha'ar ha-Arayot, lit. 'Lions' Gate', Arabic: باب الأسباط, romanized: Bab al-Asbat, lit. 'Gate of the Tribes'), also St Stephen's Gate, is one of the Gates of the Old City of Jerusalem. It is one of seven open gates in the Old City walls. It is associated with the ancient Sheep Gate.

The Damascus Gate (Arabic: باب العامود, romanized: Bāb al-ʿĀmūd, Hebrew: שער שכם, Sha'ar Sh'khem) is one of the main Gates of the Old City of Jerusalem.[1] It is located in the wall on the city's northwest side and connects to a highway leading out to Nablus, which in the Hebrew Bible was called Shechem or Sichem, and from there, in times past, to the capital of Syria, Damascus; as such, its modern English name is the Damascus Gate, and its modern Hebrew name, Sha'ar Shkhem (שער שכם), meaning Shechem Gate, or in modern terms Nablus Gate.[1][2] Of its historic Arabic names, Bab al-Nasr (باب النصر) means "gate of victory", and Bab al-Amud (باب العامود) means "gate of the column".[1] The latter name, in use continuously since at least as early as the 10th century, preserves the memory of a Roman column towering over the square behind the gate and dating to the 2nd century AD.[1][3]
