Abandoned, and still one of the largest underground airports in Europe. Construction of the base began in 1948 and was completed in 1968. SFRJ (Yugoslavia) spent around $6 billion on its construction. It was one of the largest and most expensive military projects in Europe. And in 1992 it was deliberately destroyed and abandoned. Today Željava stands on the border of Croatia (90%) and Bosnia & Herzegovina (10%) near the town of Bihać. (B&H) There are 4 parts that you can explore: three abandoned aircraft, one Douglas C-47B Skytrain and two Republic F-84G Thunderjets, the military base, 5 runways, and the most interesting, the underground facility KLEK.
If you plan on visiting, THIS IS IMPORTANT!
1. Keep your feet on the concrete or asphalt! Don't walk on the grass!
You could step on a Land Mine!
2. Wear protective clothing like gloves, boots and a mask in the underground object KLEK due to toxic material.
3. Notify the border police on the nearest border crossing about your visit.
