When I was a kid and living at home, my parents consistently hit me with a lesson I largely ignored until I was much older. My mom and dad used to tell me, "Tim, you are the sum average of your closest friends." Now, i was not a very good math student, which may be why it took so long for this simple fact to take root in my life. As I got older, this simple yet essential lesson proved true.
