NVMe M.2 SSDs have much higher performance compared to SATA M.2 SSDs. NVMe M.2 SSDs have theoretical speeds of up to 20Gbps using the PCIe bus, which is much higher than SATA M.2 SSDs with 6Gbps speed. PCIe buses can support 1x, 4x, 8x, and 16x lanes. PCIe 3.0 has an effective transfer speed of 985 MB/s per lane. In other words, the potential data transfer speed can reach 16GB/s. However, when using the M.2 form factor with the PCIe bus, only x2 and x4 lanes can be reached, meaning the maximum transfer speed is 4GB/s.
Is NVMe faster than SATA? Technically yes. Modern motherboards use SATA III technology with speeds of up to 600MB/s. NVMe drives can provide speeds of up to 3500MB/s. Performance levels are much higher than SATA SSDs regardless of form factor. SSDs that use only NVMe technology exceed the transfer speed ceilings that limit SATA-based SSDs.
Here are some things to consider when deciding between a SATA M.2 SSD and an NVMe M.2 SSD:
