The Walk - EP 88 - The Forgotten Industrial Heartland - A Walk With

In this two part series, Phil, Nikita and myself are teaming up with Steve aka ‪@Stevepicker84‬ to take a look around the forgotten industrial heartland of the Leicestershire coal field.

Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire tend to get all the attention when it comes to England's industrial past, but the forgotten county of Leicestershire played a pivotal role, also.

In this episode we start out on the former Midland Railway 'Derby to Ashby' line, at the point me and Phil finished our previous look at the railway:

From there we explore the former Newbold Clay Pits and Steve shows us some tramway tubs and track, that he dragged out of the flooded pit.

We head back onto the Midland line to look at the remains of workman's cottages, the Newbold Brickworls, overgrown railway sidings with buildings, and track still in situ, viaducts, and even some World War Two tank traps that were set up to protect the area from a German invasion.

In part two, we'll leave the Midland railway, and jump on to the 1833 Coleorton railway, a former horsedrawn tramway, through Newbold tunnel, and on to the remains of New Lount Colliery, where there is plenty still hiding in the undergrowth, from railway tracks, weigh bridges, loading platforms, and even the miners shower block.
