In this short video, I introduce our new Jersey Bull, Ares. Abby has finally given birth to a healthy male Jersey calf. Now that she's been freshened, we'll let mother and calf bond for two full days before milking begins. This time will also allow the calf to consume the colostrum. As with humans, this antibody-rich extract represents the calf's best chances for survival.
I also use this opportunity to administer a dose of calcium. I do this to prevent Milk Fever. Milk fever is a disorder mainly of dairy cows close to calving. It is a metabolic disease caused by a low blood calcium level (hypocalcaemia).
