Some of the armor parts of my Barbarian/Warrior costume is held together by magnets, specifically the breastplate, shoulder and belt. I added velcro on some of them for extra reinforcement. The magnets work quite well and I never had a problem with them detaching by itself!
Magnets work great if you typically don't have another person to help you equip your armor.
