If you're into geology, Knockan Crag is a must-see. This site is famous for its Moine Thrust, a major geological fault that exposes rocks dating back millions of years.
What is the Moine Thrust?
The Moine Thrust is a geological fault that runs along the northwest coast of Scotland. It is formed by the collision of two tectonic plates. The Moine Thrust formed about 400 million years ago when the two plates pushed together with enormous force. This pressure caused the rocks to be pushed upwards and sideways, creating the Moine Thrust.
Knockan Crag
Knockan Crag is a National Nature Reserve on the northwest coast of Scotland. It is one of the best places in the world to see the Moine Thrust. The rocks at Knockan Crag are exposed on a hillside, so you can easily see the fault and the rocks that it has brought to the surface.
The Walk
The walk to Knockan Crag is easy to follow and takes about an hour. The path starts at the car park and winds its way up the hillside. The views from the top of the hill are stunning. You can see the Moine Thrust, the mountains of Assynt, and the seaboard of Scotland.
What to Wear and Bring
Wear sturdy shoes and waterproof clothing, as the weather in Scotland can change quickly.
Be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks.
A camera is a must-have for any visit to Knockan Crag.
Overall, Knockan Crag is a beautiful and interesting place to visit. If you're into geology, you'll love seeing the Moine Thrust. And even if you're not a geology buff, you'll still enjoy the stunning views from the top of the hill.
