Texas Grit Road Trip

Texas is famous for Grit.

And it's a fabulous road trip.

Everyone has seen the pictures of dilapidated buildings in West Texas.

Gas stations. Bars and stores.

When it comes to Texas and Grit though...

I think of the most hard working parts of the Lone Star State.

Farming. Ranching. Oil. Shipping.

All the commerce in small towns across rural Texas too.

Now when we talk about Road Trips we think of attractions. Places to go. Things to see.

West Texas in particular is known for wide stretches of highways where there are no services.

As well as the wide blue Texas Sky.

My Texas Grit Road Trip started in Tennessee on the Natchez Trace Parkway.

It took me across Mississippi and Alabama, down through Louisiana to the first stop in Texas, Beaumont-Port Arthur.

From there down to Galveston Island.

Then to Corpus Christie and Port Aransas.

Out of Corpus Christie all the way to Del Rio and finally West Texas.

All on back roads.

State and US Highways.

My viewers know I am partial to Truck Stops.

With the new rig and a freshly minted Commercial Drivers License I found the Truck Stops across Texas to be excellent places to really get down into the real working nature of this part of the state.

Certainly there are a lot of weathered buildings and towns.

And it isn't a road trip to take if you like to stay on freeways, find attractions or stay in hotels.

Camping might not always be available and you'll probably eat at more than one truck stop or roadside hamburger joint.

While those kinds of things interest me...

I'm interested in towns like Sanderson, Pecos and Del Rio. I'm super excited to have seen the intersection of 285 and 652 way out in West Texas where it's all about oil.

Even more this is an interaction in the middle of nowhere that has more traffic than a many medium sized US cities. All kinds of oil oriented rigs, man camps, pump down stations...

The whole Land Man scene.

In addition I met and made friends with a lot of stray dogs and cats. My heart goes out to these former pets who find themselves stranded in campgrounds and truck stops.

It's vast. It's lonely.

It's loaded with history.
