Jung Rhythm [Saturn] by Altron [HD] [1080p]

Jung Rhythm (じゃんぐリズム) is a 1998 rhythm game developed by Altron for the Sega Saturn. Despite how it’s rendered in English, the title seems to be pronounced Jangurizumu or “Jungle Rhythm” in Japanese. This is further corroborated by several written references to the word “jungle” that appear within the cutscenes and stages. Still, considering how dreams feature prominently in the opening and (bad) ending cutscenes, the title could also be a nod to psychiatrist Carl Jung. So how do you pronounce “Jung” in English then…? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The game itself was quite obviously an attempt by Altron to cash in on the popularity of PaRappa the Rapper. As is often the case with most clones, Jung Rhythm comes off as pale imitation. While the visuals are reasonably good and some of the songs sort of catchy, the game just doesn’t play particularly well. I often find myself thinking that I nailed a line only to end up being jeered by the crowd. And sometimes when I know I flubbed one for sure, I’m cheered. It’s frustrating, but there aren't any better options on the Saturn for this style of game. Fortunately, Jung Rhythm is still very affordable if you want to take a chance on it. Just don't get your hopes up.
