In this Clinical Thursdays episode from The Equine Healing Collaborative, we follow Cat through an equine-assisted psychotherapy intervention exploring the emotional landscape of being queer in today’s political climate.
Cat is asked to choose the horse that, for her, represents what it feels like to navigate the world as a queer person. She chooses Doll—a larger, red-coated mare—explaining that her size and color symbolize the weight and difficulty she often carries in her identity.
Through a series of exercises, including ground tying and walking with her eyes closed while maintaining contact with Doll, Cat externalizes the fear, uncertainty, and self-protection that can come with daily interactions—like wondering whether it’s safe to mention her wife to a new neighbor.
This video illustrates how equine-assisted psychotherapy can give voice to experiences that are often silenced, offering space for safety, connection, and healing.
