Quanzhou Guandi Temple is located on Tumen Street, Licheng District, Quanzhou City. It is commonly known as Tumen Guandi Temple.
It was first built in the Song Dynasty and has a history of more than a thousand years. It was originally a water god temple. During the reign of Zhu Yuanzhang, the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty, Guandi temples were built at each of the seven city gates in Quanzhou. This temple is named Tonghuai Guanyue Temple because it is located on Tonghuai Street. The existing temple was renovated in 1927 (the sixteenth year of the Republic of China) and underwent a comprehensive renovation again from 1986 to 1990.
The temple faces south and is composed of three adjacent temples: Wucheng Hall, Chongxian Hall, and Sanyi Temple. All are three-entry temples with a construction area of more than 1,300 square meters. In the main hall, Wucheng Hall, on the left side of the main seat, is dedicated to Lord Guan Shengdi Jun, and on the right side is dedicated to King Yue Wumu. Twenty-four famous loyal and valiant generals throughout history are enshrined as accompaniments. On the left is Sanyi Temple, where Liu Bei, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Kong Ming, and Zhao Yun are enshrined. On the right is Chongxian Hall, where the three generations of ancestors of Guan Yu are enshrined.
The interior decoration of the temple is exquisite, including wood carvings, stone carvings, and clay sculptures. The dragon sculptures made of porcelain on the roof ridges have different shapes. There are also many precious cultural relics, such as the ancient plaque "Zhengqi" by Zhu Xi of the Song Dynasty and "Filling the Heaven and Earth" by Zhang Ruitu of the Ming Dynasty, as well as stele inscriptions from the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. The couplet "Crafty, treacherous, and cunning. What's the use of being sincere when coming to the temple? Fair and upright. There's no harm in not worshipping when entering the gate." reflects the loyalty and integrity concepts of Lord Guan.
On both sides of the mountain gate in front of the temple are two statues of fine horses, namely Guan Yu's Red Hare and Yue Fei's Xueqing Qiji.
The incense here is always flourishing throughout the year, and believers come from as far as Southeast Asia and Taiwan. On the first and fifteenth days of each month and festivals such as Guandi's birthday, it is extremely lively. Quanzhou Guandi culture is an important part of Minnan culture and even Fujian-Taiwan culture and plays an important role in folk exchanges across the Taiwan Strait.
