The Black Sea: Under War’s Shadow (2022)
Director: Marc Garmirian
Duration: 52 mins

Language: English
Country of production: France
Once part of the Soviet sphere, it now borders Russia, Crimea, Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, Georgia — and especially Ukraine. Since the start of the war, the region has become a hotspot for global tensions: ports bombed, trade routes blocked, populations displaced, and embargoes enforced.
Despite the turmoil, life along the coast goes on — and in some places, even thrives. On the Russian Riviera in Sochi and Crimea, nightclubs and youth festivals are packed, just a few kilometers from active military zones. Further west, Romania’s port of Constanța is overwhelmed with Ukrainian exports since the blockade of Odessa. And every day, Turkish coastguards patrol the Bosphorus Strait, checking ships for weapons and illegal cargo.
This documentary travels along the shores of the Black Sea, revealing a region pulled between war and normalcy. A place where trade, tourism, and culture continue, even as geopolitical fault lines deepen. From holidaymakers to harbor workers, we meet the people living on the edge of conflict.
