Recent research connects struggles with math proficiency to gaps in early numeracy. These gaps cause difficulties with more advanced math concepts that build on these prerequisite skills.
In this interactive training, participants will learn mathematical progressions and practice hands-on, evidence-based approaches specific to K-12 mathematics content. Come explore the tasks of mathematics interventionists for helping students catch-up in their math proficiency as we discover:
• Research–supported approaches for students struggling in mathematics
• The roles of math intervention across multiple grade levels
• A formative assessment strategy to target student needs
• Concrete-Visual-Abstract approaches
• Application of number lines and the area model to constructs from counting to polynomials and factoring
• Explicit and systematic instruction
• Retention tasks to reduce learning loss of students

About Presenter: Brad Witzel, Ph.D., is an award-winning teacher and researcher who serves as the Adelaide Worth Daniels Distinguished Professor of Education at Western Carolina University. As a classroom teacher he worked in multiple settings teaching mainly math and science to high-achieving students with disabilities and at-risk concerns. Dr. Witzel has authored 10 books and over 60 other professional publications, developed over 20 multimedia resources, and delivered over 600 presentations and workshops. He has served as a board member consulting with several states on RTI and MTSS, served as an author/panelist on the Institute of Education Sciences RTI Math Practice Guide and as an invited reviewer of the National Mathematics Advisory Panel Final Report. Most importantly, he is a father of two, husband of an educator, and son of two educators.
