JOAQUIN ACHUCARRO AT 90, HOMAGE TO HIS MUSICALITY AND LONGEVITY, MADRID RECITAL OCT 2021. BRAVO !!!
THIS RECORDING IS ALSO A TRIBUTE TO HIS LOVING WIFE EMMA JIMENEZ.
I have only heard this sound from Rubinstein" -- Zubin Mehta
"There is something special with Achúcarro. Very few musicians can extract this kind of sound from the piano" -- Sir Simon Rattle
"The piano is a percussion instrument. Some extraordinary pianists, and Joaquin is one of them, can make it appear that the piano goes legato and that the notes grow into each other... there is a very particular sound that he can make that now very, very few pianists can make. It's a very rare thing and it's instantly recognizable"
-- Sir Simon Rattle
Born in Bilbao, Spain, November 1, 1932, Achúcarro displayed exceptional musical talent as a child. Intending to follow his family’s tradition and study physics at Madrid University, he enrolled but then decided to follow his heart and concentrate on music. After training in Paris, Vienna and Salzburg, he won the Liverpool International Competition in 1959 (one year after Zubin Mehta had won it for conducting). He then debuted with the London Symphony, earning rave reviews in the London papers, and his career was launched.
He has worked with 366 conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Sir Adrian Boult, Riccardo Chailly, Sir Colin Davis, Zubin Mehta, Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Seiji Ozawa and Sir Simon Rattle.
Since September 1989 he holds the specially endowed Joel Estes Tate Chair at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas.
His students at SMU have won 16 international first prizes and several second prizes, and many of them are already performing and teaching around the world.
Achúcarro's style is characterized by a poetic sound with clean technique that is not flamboyant.
He is a gentleman, discrete, modest, just like his interpretations.
Achúcarro remains striving to make his first class technique as inconspicuous as possible in serving the cause of Music.
He is an Honor to music.
