Castelejo Levada walk wear Porto da Cruz, Madeira

Online research brought up a lot of results from locals or digital nomads - people who'd spent long periods of time on Madeira Island. Whilst no one was saying the Levada near Porto da Cruz known as the Referta Castelejo Levada Walk was bad, indifferent seemed to be the best way to describe the information I found. However the photos from Levada do Castelejo were telling my gut, this was a Madeira levada walk that would be right up my street. Unlike all the other Madeira levada walks we went on, which were removed from civilisation and had us walking in thick forests, deep into valleys, this Porto da Cruz walk wound us through villages, right past peoples homes - typical Madeira houses and terraced gardens. It wasn't over grown, so the views out over the villages, the hills, wide open valleys, the ocean and Penha d'Águia, the huge rock separating Porto da Cruz from Faial. Getting to see the fruits and vegetables locals were growing, seeing how the levadas would feed directly into the terraced fields, and coming across locals and their dogs too was excitingly different. Perhaps the digital nomads and locals feel this is like every day life and it's therefore pretty normal for them, but as a tourist on a short visit for a Madeira holiday, I found it to be fascinating and very pretty. If you're looking for hikes near Porto da Cruz, I couldn't recommend Levada da Referta Castelejo more highly. The one element that stayed true to any Madeira levada walk is this is virtually flat making it another one of the easy levadas Madeira. Whilst this is one of many walks near Porto da Cruz, it's not too far from the popular holiday spot of Canico. If you're planning to visit Madeira island, or are just looking for things to do on Madeira to decide on whether a Madeira vacation is right for you, I hope this video will be helpful.
