The church was built of grey stone around 1300 with a nave and a free-standing bell tower. The church was built by the “Master of Sala”, who was commissioned to found and build a church in Kumla, but also in Kila and Sala.
During the latter part of the 15th century, the flat wooden ceiling was replaced with a star vault made of brick and was provided with lime paintings by Albertus Pictor. According to a visitation protocol from 1630, this took place in 1482. These paintings have never been painted over and were cleaned in 2017.
The church tower was completed in 1765. The tower replaced the previous bell tower. In September 1779, the sacristy was rebuilt when its old vault was demolished and replaced with a flat, paneled ceiling. During the 18th century, the windows were also enlarged. The choir windows have stained glass windows made in 1960 by Västerås artist Nils-Aron Berge.
When regilding the cross on the church tower, a tin can was found with a letter with the names of the priests and parishioners who were active when the church tower was built. Today, a copy is in the box and a new original with current names.
Can’t wait for you to go and see this place for yourself. Be sure to say hi to Martin. What an awesome person.
