Kai released this short film onto YouTube on Christmas 2012. Some lads over on YEESHKUL! managed to acquire the raw file and ended up sharing it to all fans in 2013. Now, this short film has been synced to the best of our abilities.
This scan is rough. It's veryyyy cropped and has lost frames, glitches and out of order shots. Perhaps a fresh scan will appear one day, but for now, we had to work with the material that was shared a decade ago.
We had a go at minimizing the horrible blocky noise but all attempts did not meet our standards. We love film grain, but that is not what is seen here. This is very clearly a home-scan and there was little that we could do with it aside from locking the image, syncing it and colouring it. Minor post-processing efforts were made, but nothing major, as the scan is just too poor.
Despite these problems, this film is a neat little treat. It has a cool segment of 'The Travel Sequence' and two long segments of 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene'. I would like to acknowledge the syncing efforts on the first shot as well as 'Brain Damage'; these shots are not confirmed to be these moments. The first one is our best guess and the Brain Damage one has Roger at the mic for a long period. Roger had little vocal parts in 1972, so Brain Damage is just a guess. The blocky home-scanner noise prevents us from getting any more useful information out of the film to better determine a more accurate guess. On top of all of that, almost all of the shots in this film were originally out of order, making it harder to guess regardless of the noise.
Colouring was hard too, only because of how dark this scan is. If the original reel got a new scan at high resolution, it could look incredible. There are some flashing colours visible in 'One Of These Days', for example, but any efforts to pull them out only resulted in an even poorer looking image. Hopefully a better scan surfaces one day!
