Tru64 UNIX: The History of a 64-Bit Operating System
Originally developed by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), Tru64 UNIX was a sophisticated 64-bit operating system designed specifically for the Alpha hardware architecture. The platform underwent several identity changes over its lifespan, starting as DEC OSF/1 AXP before being rebranded as Digital UNIX and finally receiving its current name under Compaq. It was technically distinct from many competitors due to its foundation on the Mach kernel and its advanced TruCluster and AdvFS technologies. Ownership eventually shifted to Hewlett-Packard (HP) following its merger with Compaq, leading to a focus on maintenance rather than new development. Official support for the product ultimately concluded in late 2012, marking the end of its commercial life. Today, it is remembered for its high-performance features and its role as the native Unix environment for Alpha-based systems.
