Dedicated to Francis (1888-1967) and Peter (1895-1981), my great-grand fathers, drafted Habsburg soldiers who fought in the First Word War from the very beginning in 1914 to the bitter end in 1918, on the bloody fronts of Galicia, Drina, Isonzo, and South Tirol.
The sonata was composed in 1912 by Prokofiev (1891-1953), and first performed, by the composer himself, in 1914, just a few months before the start of the War, when Prokofiev was 23 and my great-grand fathers were 26 and 19 years old. This is not pretty music. Although it contains lyricism, it is often sarcastic and brutal. Thunder at the twilight of Romanov Russia. The War is in the air. When the War actually started Prokofiev did his best to avoid being drafted by the Russian army. He survived the First World War, and died in 1953, on the same day as Stalin.
00:06 I. Allegro, ma non troppo - Più mosso - Tempo primo
06:48 II. Scherzo. Allegro marcato
09:10 III. Andante
15:58 IV. Vivace - Moderato - Vivace
Recorded in Mazzoleni Hall at the Royal Conservatory in Toronto, Canada on May 16, 2025, 111 years after the first performance. This performance is given in partial fulfillment of the requirements of The Glenn Gould School’s Bachelor of Music, Performance (Honours) Program.
