We returned to the grave of Luke Hutchinson, a man born into slavery in 1841, to finish what we started—removing the clamps from his repaired headstone and seeing it whole once again. This cemetery began as a burial ground for enslaved individuals on the Davidson plantation, and it is a sacred space gone undocumented—until now.
While we were here, we made a heartbreaking discovery: the fieldstone marked “Mary” appears to also say “Baby.” These engraved fieldstones are rare, and this one speaks to the grief and strength of generations past. In this video, I also answer questions about why formerly enslaved people often carried their enslaver’s surnames—and what happens to this work after I’m gone.
We were the first to document this site. The only ones restoring it. And this work must continue.
If you believe history like this deserves to be remembered and restored, please consider supporting the mission.
