Happy New Year! Sail Away has been one of my favorites since I learned about it from a comment. I was originally really excited to hear Ron perform with his natural tenor, and I still love it for that reason.
It's great they performed it live, and there is also a made-for-TV performance on YouTube as well.
Ron is such a special addition to the Temptations at this time, as "Back To Basics" was his first album to appear on after Glenn quit the group (as said in Richard Street's biography)
In the end, Ron was what Otis had always sought, a consistent lead tenor. As such, he is still with the Temptations with the second longest tenure with the group, being together nearly 42 years.
As this was released in 1983 on Back To Basics, I'm unsure as to whether Dennis Edwards is on the recording or if it was just Ron, Richard, Otis, Melvin. Ali would only feature on one song on 'BtB', where he took lead, "Stop The World Right Here (I Wanna Get Off)". If you know more, please let me know!
