(24 Aug 2016) RACHEL WEISZ AT THE NEW YORK PREMIERE OF HER LATEST FILM, 'COMPLETE UNKNOWN'
British actress Rachel Weisz brought her new movie "Complete Unknown" - about a woman with serious identity issues - to New York on Tuesday (23 AUGUST).
In the film, Weisz plays a woman who changes identity throughout the years, and one day is confronted by her past.
"It's a story - it struck me as really crazy thing to do with your life to pretend to be somebody for six years, and completely change your name, change your identity, change your social security (number), change your profession and become somebody else. It seems outlandish, but apparently it happens," she said.
Director Joshua Marston, who also co-wrote the screenplay, was in contact with Weisz while penning the script, however, the actress says it didn't influence her approach to the role.
"In some ways it didn't really help me at all because the story is really elusive and mysterious that you never really figure out why she does what she does," Weisz said.
On the positive side, she did like the story's subtext.
"The thing I really like about it, and this was something that Josh really believed in, is that she isn't punished for her freedom, like the end of 'Thelma and Louise,' ladies got to die, right? You know, because they had too much fun," Weisz said.
While Weisz feels her character enjoyed living as other people, she's happy with her own identity.
"I'm actually really happy just being myself. I don't really have a desire to be anyone else."
Not even 007, like hubby Daniel Craig?
"Uh, yeah. That's a guy. He's a guy," Weisz said.
"Complete Unknown," which also stars Michael Shannon, Kathy Bates and Danny Glover, opens in U.S. theaters on 26 August.
Other dates include:
22 September Greece
7 October Canada
