On June 24th 2022, Open Ocean Robotics deployed 2 unmanned surface vessels (USVs) off the shore of Bamfield for the DFO Bamfield mission. Our USV, Data Xplorer 1, caught glimpse of a marine mammal at around 11:32am.
Our marine project scientist, Madeleine Bouvier, identified them as a mix of Harbour Porpoises and Pacific White Sided Dolphins! The Pacific White Sided Dolphins were identified based on the white colouration on the back half of their dorsal fin and on their bellies. The Harbour Porpoises were identified by the shape of their dorsal fin and the rolling way they surfaced, which can be seen later on in the interaction.
Watch closely and see for yourself!
