Meet Blind Tom Wiggins (1849–1908) . One of the most extraordinary musicians in American history—a blind, enslaved piano prodigy who mesmerised audiences with his unmatched ability to replicate and compose music entirely by ear. Often called the original Blind Wonder (before Stevie Wonder) and the Michael Jackson of the 19th century, Tom’s talent was both a gift and a curse, as he was exploited for profit throughout his life.
His compositions, including The Battle of Manassas and The Rain Storm, captured the sounds of war, nature, and life in a way no one had heard before.
Yet, despite his fame, Tom Wiggins was largely forgotten as music evolved into the jazz, blues, and rock era. Today, his legacy is being rediscovered, with tributes like Elton John’s The Ballad of Blind Tom and his original sheet music preserved at Columbus State University Archives.
Should Tom Wiggins be remembered alongside music legends like Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, and Curtis Mayfield? Watch this documentary to explore his untold story and the impact of blind Black musicians in shaping music history.
