I made this sliding dovetail plane

As its name suggests, a sliding dovetail plane can only do one thing. If you don't have one, you might have never missed it. But the sliding dovetail is a really nice joint and I have always wanted to make a wooden specialty plane.


So here it is. I made the body from a piece of ash that I found on the firewood pile. Since the relatively sharp edge of the sole would probably wear out quite quickly, I added a piece of steel to protect it. It also looks nice, I think.


The iron is made from 1095 carbon steel and I also added a nicker that cuts the fibres in front of the blade for cleaner cross-grain guts. I had a lot of fun making this and although this was my first more complex wooden plane project it ended up working quite nicely.
